Lead by their beloved king and his daughter Princess Nausicaä and protected from the toxic fumes by the valley’s winds, the villagers live a simple existence of farming their still fertile land. The good people of The Valley of the Wind have lived in relative peace with these creatures as well as their toxic habitats for years. The jungles are ruled by giant insects, including creatures called the Ohm -an eight eyed pill bug-like monsters that roam the forests and the deserts surrounding them. Consequently, humanity has been left fighting a losing battle with vast toxic jungles or “Sea of Decay” that threaten to poison everything in their vicinity. A thousand years has passed since a great war encompassing a use of doomsday devises called “giant warriors” nearly wiped out all life on the planet. Valley of the Wind tells a story of post-apocalyptic world. She is something truly unique in a sea of prophesized saviours – a hero for the ages and an inspiration to us all. The originality and freshness of the story stems from the kind of hero Nausicaä is and the actions she takes to change the world. It’s not simply the fact that this hero happens to be a woman, or the fact that the tale consists of more complex themes than what one usually sees in stories of the same ilk. It’s an adventure tale, a hero’s tale, but one that somehow manages to skip any clichés that usually burden the genre.
